NSW Small Business Commissioner meets with Kempsey business owners

NSW Small Business Commissioner Yasmin King

Just six weeks into her new appointment, NSW Small Business Commissioner Yasmin King was on a tour of the State to meet small business owners, including those in Kempsey in late October.
About a dozen business owners and managers took the opportunity to meet with Ms King at Kempsey Golf Course to discuss issues of concern relating to the State Government.
The visit was organized and facilitated by NSW Chamber of Commerce and supported by Kempsey Chamber of Commerce.
Chief amongst concerns from business owners was how much time they were forced to spend complying with government rules and regulations, especially for payroll tax, Workcover and traineeships.
Lack of communication between government departments was resulting in confusion and duplication of paperwork, business owners said.
Ms King committed to returning the feedback to the relevant Government departments with recommendations for improvement.
Minister for Small Business Katrina Hodgkinson said the NSW Government had created the new position of Small Business Commissioner to restore business confidence and “ensure that small businesses in this State are given the best opportunity to thrive and grow in today’s highly competitive and versatile marketplace”.
Ms King’s job is to:
• Be an independent advocate for small business operators
• Be a first-stop-shop for small businesses facing unfair market practices
• Advise the State Government on how to cut red tape adversely affecting business
• To assist the Government in developing policies specifically addressing the needs of small business operators
• Provide a low cost dispute resolution service
• Be responsible for the Retail Leases Act 1994, since many small businesses are retailers.
“Your input and examples will assist me in working towards ensuring practical solutions are implemented to back our State’s 650,000 small businesses,” Ms King said.
“If you have an urgent small business issue, please ring my office, email or fax your query and we will aim to get back to you withing 24 hours.
”Kempsey business owners wishing to get in touch with Ms King can email her at we.listen@smallbusiness.nsw.gov.au or phone 1300 795 534 or visit the website www.smallbusiness.nsw.gov.au
